Work in the Mozambican parliament was interrupted on Wednesday after protests by the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party.
“Down with the dictatorship” and “Do not kill democracy” were some of the signs raised by Renamo deputies, refusing to discuss changes to the electoral law proposed by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the ruling party.
At stake is the holding of district elections, within the framework of the 2024 general elections, which Frelimo considers unfeasible, while Renamo stresses that they are provided for in the Constitution, after having been agreed between its former leader, Afonso Dhlakama, and the Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi.
