Lebanese banks remain closed to prevent robberies

Lebanon’s banks will remain closed until further notice, due to “lack of security”, after several bank robberies by depositors, who demand to receive their savings, blocked by the liquidity crisis affecting the country.

The information was published on Wednesday by the Association of Banks of Lebanon. The entity added that the risks for bankers, as well as for clients, are great, due to the “continuation of the inciting environment that hides behind the risks and threats.”

In recent weeks, Lebanon has been the scene of several robberies of banking facilities by depositors, who were desperately seeking to recover their money blocked by banks due to the economic crisis, which has already caused the local currency to devalue by 90%. .

The first robbery occurred on August 11, when an armed man robbed a bank branch, where he remained for several hours before turning himself in to the police, after receiving $30,000 to pay for the treatment of his sick father.

Four days later, this depositor was released, without charge, after the bank withdrew the complaint.
