It is a nightmare whose outcome was not disastrous. A Brazilian woman spent ten hours in a grave before her cries for help allowed workers at the Visconde do Rio Branco cemetery, some 100 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro, to save her.
The 36-year-old woman told police she was attacked at her home and beaten by three men who accused her of having “misplaced” the drugs and weapons she kept for them at home, reports the independent.
Her husband was also present during the attack, but managed to escape. Discovering that her victim had passed out, she was taken to the town cemetery before being placed in a tomb that they sealed. The young woman herself explains that she realized that she was trapped when she regained consciousness.
A sealed tomb not long ago
After ten hours of confinement, the 30-year-old was finally able to be rescued. Cemetery workers noticed that the grave from which the screams were coming had been recently sealed and traces of blood were visible nearby.
Evacuated from the cavity in an emergency, the victim was transported to the hospital for examination. She is currently in intensive care and may have surgery. She does indeed suffer a head injury and she runs the risk of having a finger amputated, she explained to the G1 media, from the Globo group, the director of the João Batista hospital where she is hospitalized.
Two suspects, ages 20 and 23, previously convicted of drug and arms trafficking, were arrested Sunday in nearby towns, police said at a news conference Tuesday. They are currently in pretrial detention awaiting trial. Police say they are still looking for the third suspect.
