The presidents of France and China, Emmanuel Macron and Xi Jinping, respectively, called on Thursday for negotiations to be held “as soon as possible” to end the ongoing war in Ukraine and rejected the use of nuclear weapons.
In joint statements after a bilateral meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Macron said it was necessary to “resume discussions as soon as possible to build a lasting peace.”
For his part, Xi said “nuclear weapons cannot be used” and condemned any “attacks against civilians.”
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
