At least nine people have been killed and three injured in southern Johannesburg in a shootout with police that broke up a robbery of a cash-in-transit van, a South African Police Service (SAPS) source said Thursday.

The incident took place in Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg, South Africa’s economic capital, where agents from the Rapid Reaction and Criminal Intelligence Units located a gang of 12 armed suspects preparing to carry out the heist with explosives.
“The suspects were in a home in Sebokeng, where a shootout took place between the armed suspects and police,” South African police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe said in a statement that Lusa had access to.

“In total, eight suspects were pronounced dead at the scene, while the ninth suspect died in hospital. Three others were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,” it said.
South African police seized “six shotguns, six commercial explosive devices already mounted and ready to be detonated and four vehicles” according to the note.
“We cannot rule with criminals. We affirm the authority of the state in defense of our communities,” said Police Minister Bheki Cele, who visited the site.

According to the police, the suspects are responsible for several robberies related to the transport of valuables in the South African province of Gauteng, where Johannesburg is located.
Armed and explosive robberies of vans carrying valuables are common in South Africa, the world’s most violent country.
