The ministry also said it was responding to the Chinese exercises “in a calm and composed manner”, adding that the fighters detected until 4pm local time (8am GMT) were fighters and bombers.
China’s military announced two days of “combat readiness” military maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait on Saturday following the passage of the island’s leader through the United States, and also said it would conduct live fire exercises on Monday.
In response to this announcement, the island’s leader Tsai Ing-wen stated that Taiwan is facing China’s “authoritarian expansionism”.
However, the United States warned that any unilateral action by China against Taiwan would threaten global stability, and urged China to show “restraint” in military exercises.
