The Chinese government said on Monday that “Taiwan independence and peace and stability” in the Taiwan Strait are incompatible as the Chinese military continues military maneuvers around the island.
Wang Wenbin, spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, said the Taiwan issue is “a purely domestic concern of China” and that the “biggest threat to peace in Taiwan” is “separatist activities and collusion with foreigners”.
The spokesman hopes that the international community will “understand the essence of the Taiwanese issue”, “resolutely uphold the ‘One China’ principle” and “oppose any form of separatist activity” on the island.
Wang echoed what the Chinese military said on Saturday: “The maneuvers are a serious warning to Taiwan’s separatist forces and are necessary to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The Chinese military has sent dozens of fighter jets and warships to Taiwan in recent days following the meeting between the island’s leader, Tsai Ing-wen, and Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy , in California.
China also said it had deployed fighter jets with “live ammunition” and the aircraft carrier Shandong to carry out “feint attacks” on key Taiwanese targets.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry condemned China’s actions, describing them as “an irrational act that endangers regional security and stability”.
At the end of World War II, Taiwan became part of the Republic of China under the Nationalist government of Chiang Kai-shek. After the defeat by the Communist Party, in the Chinese Civil War, in 1949, the Nationalist government took refuge on the island, which until this Monday maintains the official name of the Republic of China, as opposed to the People’s Republic of China. , in mainland China.
Beijing considers the island part of its territory and threatens violent reunification if Taipei formally declares independence.
