Russia today expressed its full support for China’s military maneuvers around Taiwan, which concluded on Monday, saying Beijing was the victim of many “provocative” actions.
“In a very short time, we have witnessed many provocative actions against the People’s Republic of China”said Kremlin (Russian Presidency) spokesman Dmitry Peskov during his usual daily telephone press conference.
“And, of course, China has the sovereign right to respond to these provocative actions in various ways, including military exercises in strict accordance with international law.”underlined the Russian spokesman.
Peskov added that “everyone should respect the right of China, as well as other countries, to act in this way.”
China announced today that it will resume military exercises around Taiwan that began Saturday in response to last Wednesday’s meeting in California between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and US Congressional Representative Kevin McCarthy,” successfully” completed.
At the end of World War II, Taiwan became part of the Republic of China under the Nationalist government of Chiang Kai-shek.
After the defeat by the Communist Party, in the Chinese Civil War, in 1949, the Nationalist government took refuge on the island, which to this day maintains the official name of the Republic of China, unlike the People’s Republic of China, on the mainland Chinese.
