Russia accused of “cynicism” and “harvesting” in the UN Security Council

“Cynicism” and “exploitation” were some of the words used to define Russia’s performance at the head of the UN Security Council. After a first debate on children in conflicts, which was blocked on the Internet and boycotted by several countries, the topic of the discussion on Monday was “violations of the agreements that regulate the export of arms.”

Despite asserting that the debate had nothing to do with Ukraine, the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, was quick to point the finger at the US and its allies. He accused the West of not wanting to end the war because it was enriching the arms manufacturers and defending its strategy for the world. An action that the ambassador described as a violation of international standards and assured that the situation in Ukraine is the responsibility of the West.

In addition, the representative of Moscow defended that the “irresponsible action of the US and allies” had already happened in other parts of the world and that the weapons delivered ended up falling into “the hands of terrorists, organized crime or the black market.” “. And he rejected the accusations that the countries are selling weapons to Moscow.

The US was the first country to respond, accusing Russia of initiating the Security Council presidency by trying to justify “child kidnapping” and now trying to present itself as an “advocate for arms control”, wanting to forget that invaded a neighboring country. The North American representative also defended that the example of Ukraine has nothing to do with the export of arms or illegal delivery, being only a situation of legitimate defense.

“The conflict in Ukraine is not part of an arms export system. Ukraine was invaded and has every right to defend itself,” explained the US ambassador.

On the American side, the idea that the international community has “every right to support Ukraine” is defended, but the same is not the case with Russia, according to the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the UN, Barbara Woodward. By receiving weapons from Iran and North Korea, Putin’s country is violating sanctions he helped pass. The London representative also called for no one to supply arms to Moscow.

The British ambassador also said that Russia is currently “defending arms export and import control agreements” but has boycotted work to improve these understandings. On the French side, the representative of Paris, Nicolas de Rivière, recalled that if Ukraine needs weapons it is because of the Russian aggression and regretted the attempt of political exploitation that Moscow is carrying out.

The French ambassador also accused Russia of “cynicism” for defending agreements to which it did not even adhere. Poland, which was present despite not being part of the Security Council, said that Russia, without any concern, supplies weapons to the mercenaries of the Wagner group.

In this meeting that lasted more than two hours, several states sided with Moscow. Among them China, which said that selling weapons in conflict zones is adding fuel to the fire and defended that the delivery or sale of arms should be prohibited to defend its own geopolitical interests.

Belarus and Iran also defended the role of Moscow and Russia in the Ukraine conflict, harshly criticizing the West.
