Russia believed this Wednesday that the leaking of classified North American documents, namely related to Ukraine, could be part of a disinformation campaign by Washington to try to “cheat” Russia.
“We have no position on this,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Serguei Ryabkov told Russian news agencies. “Maybe it’s false, deliberately toxic information,” he added.
“Since the United States is part of the conflict (in Ukraine) and is actually waging a hybrid war against us, these methods are possible to deceive the enemy, i.e. the Russian Federation,” he claimed.
The documents, released last week by media outlets such as The New York Times, include assessments and reports from US intelligence agencies regarding the war in Ukraine, namely on the chances of success of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, as well as with US allies.
The documents, published on social media, could be valuable to Moscow as they reveal the extent to which US secret services have penetrated parts of the Russian military apparatus, according to US media.
The US Justice Department, which opened an investigation on Saturday, is trying to identify the source of the leak and is investigating the validity of the released documents.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion – justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russian security – was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending arms to Ukraine and impose political and economic sanctions on Russia.
