The Kremlin on Wednesday defended the need to prove the authenticity of a video alleged by Ukrainian authorities to show a Russian soldier beheading a Ukrainian prisoner.
Russians filmed a horrifying video of the brutal beheading of a captured Ukrainian soldier. This is yet another monstrous crime of the Russian army and a violation of all conventions and moral principles of humanity. https://t.co/XGLIgseHxY

“First of all, it is necessary to prove the authenticity of the images,” Russian Presidency spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at his daily press conference.
Peskov admitted that the images are terrible, but insisted that it is necessary to verify their authenticity.
“This may be a reason to investigate whether it really happened and if so, who did it and where,” said the spokesperson.
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) on Wednesday announced the opening of an investigation into the perpetrators of the beheading of a Ukrainian soldier, allegedly by Russian soldiers, appearing in a video believed to have been recorded last summer.
The video of the beheading circulated on Russian social media and was discovered by the US television network CNN, along with another similar recording, more recent, showing the bodies of two decapitated Ukrainian soldiers.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the soldier’s execution was “not a coincidence or an isolated episode”.
“They’ve done it in the past. It’s what they’ve done in Bucha and thousands of other times. Everyone has to respond [ao caso]. All leaders and don’t expect it to be forgotten in time,” Zelnsky told UNIAN news agency.
