On Tuesday, a child managed to cross the fence around the White House and sneak into the gardens of the presidential complex, the US Secret Service’s chief of communications told Efe.
According to this spokesman, the “curious” visitor managed to “briefly” enter the gardens of the mansion, where the President of the United States, Joe Biden, was at the time.
Immediately, several Secret Service agents in charge of White House security located the boy and took him to his parents, who were waiting for him on Pennsylvania Avenue, the street in front of the complex.
Access to the White House was restricted for the brief period it took for agents to reunite the child with his parents.
Although Secret Services have not confirmed it, this could be the first time anyone has entered the White House grounds since the fence was raised to about 10 feet.
Secret services decided to raise the fence after several people entered the complex without permission.
One of the most infamous cases was that of Omar González, a former soldier who jumped the fence in September 2014 and used a knife to cross several rooms of the presidential residence.
Then-President of the United States, Barack Obama, had left a few minutes earlier.
The White House building is one of the most secure in the world: there are snipers on the roof, and to enter as a journalist or visitor you must have a special pass and go through security checks similar to those at airports.
