The US anticipates a migratory wave on the border with Mexico in May

The Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States, Alejandro Mayorkas, said Tuesday that a migratory wave is expected on the border with Mexico in May, when a rule that allows immediate expulsions expires.

During a Senate hearing, Mayorkas said that President Joe Biden’s government is “increasing resources” for border security and migrant case management to deal with this scenario.

Among the measures that will be taken, given the end of the so-called Title 42 on May 11, is a greater sanction for those who enter the US irregularly and the expansion of legal migration routes.

Mayorkas considered that the country’s migration and asylum systems are “dysfunctional” and asked Congress for measures to correct them.

“Our entire immigration system is dysfunctional. I think there is unanimity on this. We look forward to Congress reforming it,” he said.

Title 42, a controversial rule created by the Donald Trump government and maintained by the current one, allows migrants of certain nationalities who arrive at the border to be expelled to Mexico, without having the opportunity to request asylum.

Since it came into force in 2020, it has been used to carry out more than 2.5 million evictions, according to Refugees International.
