Conservative radio host Larry Elder announces candidacy for the US presidency

Conservative radio host Larry Elder, who was seeking to replace California’s governor in a failed 2021 referendum, announced on Thursday that will run in the 2024 Republican Party primaries.

Elder, 70, first made the announcement on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and later on Twitter.

“America is in decline, but that decline is not inevitable. We can enter another American golden age, but we must elect a leader who can take us there. That is why I am running for president,” he wrote.

The nominee joins a list of Republicans seeking the U.S. presidency, including former President Donald Trump, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Governor William Asa Hutchinson and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.

The country’s president, Democrat Joe Biden, has already said he plans to run for a second term.

Elder first ran for public office in 2021, when he received the most votes of 46 people hoping to replace California Governor Gavin Newsom in a recall referendum. In the end, a majority of voters voted against Newsom’s removal.

Elder, who is black, has been critical of the Democrats’ so-called “woke” agenda, a term used to denote a social conscience around issues of social and racial justice, the Black Lives Matter movement and the idea of systemic racism, positions that have put them at odds with many members of the black community.

During the retraction campaign, a former fiancee of the radio professional said Elder showed her a gun during an argument in 2015. Elder denied the allegations.
