British Deputy Prime Minister resigns

British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab resigned on Friday, less than 24 hours after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak received the report of an independent investigation conducted over several months by a lawyer.

Raab, who also resigned as justice minister, said in a letter of resignation that he “felt an obligation to accept the outcome of the investigation”, which dismissed all but two charges against him.

“I also believe that the two negative conclusions are flawed and set a dangerous precedent for good governance behavior,” he argued.

According to the politician, “by setting the bar high for intimidation [“bullying”] so low, this investigation has set a dangerous precedent”.

“It will encourage unfair complaints against ministers and have a deterrent effect on those pushing reforms on behalf of the government – and ultimately on the British people,” he said.

Several employees complained about Dominic Raab’s behaviour, which he described as “deeply derogatory” to the point that one of them started crying.

Dozens of people, including himself, have made statements as part of this investigation.

In addition to being number two in the government, Dominic Raab is also Minister of Justice, but before that he was also Minister of Foreign Affairs.

This is the second dismissal of the board for bullying since Sunak took over from Liz Truss six months ago.

Minister without Portfolio Gavin Williamson was ousted in November following allegations of harassment against Conservative Party colleagues.
