One dead, 39 injured in bus accident involving Moroccan workers in Spain

A bus carrying Moroccan workers overturned in southern Spain early Monday, killing one person and injuring 39 others, three of whom were seriously injured, Spanish emergency services said.

The accident occurred shortly before dawn on International Workers’ Day, on a road about 50 kilometers from Huelva, in the southwest of the country.

“The number of injured as a result of the overturning of the bus has risen to 39,” said the regional emergency service, noting that the bus was carrying Moroccan seasonal workers.

“One woman died, three others were seriously injured, 14 suffered moderate injuries and 22 suffered minor injuries.”he added, noting that the driver suffered minor injuries in the accident.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident, which took place in an area known for its extensive agricultural industry, with Andalusia being Europe’s largest exporter of fruit and vegetables.

In statements ahead of Labor Day, Labor Secretary Yolanda Diaz expressed her “condolences and deep regret to the workers affected by this very serious accident”.

Spain has traditionally depended on thousands of seasonal workers from abroad to pick the fruit. The province of Huelva produces 300,000 tons of strawberries per year, the vast majority of Spanish production.
