UN Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs arrives in Sudan

UN Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths arrived in Sudan on Wednesday to assess how to help millions of civilians who have been locked in a power war between two rival generals since April 15.

“I have arrived in Port Sudan to reaffirm the UN’s commitment to the Sudanese people”he wrote on Twitter, as the country receives its first shipments of humanitarian aid.

According to the UN, the conflict caused a “catastrophe” in the country, one of the poorest in the world and where one in three residents depended on humanitarian aid before the war.

More than 330,000 people have been displaced and another 100,000 have fled to neighboring countries, according to the UN, which estimates the likelihood of refugees eight times as many.

The fighting, which began on April 15, left more than 500 dead, mostly in Khartoum and Darfur, in the west of the country, and thousands injured, according to conservative estimates.
