The Organization for European Security and Cooperation (OSCE) calls for closer cooperation with the UN to try to end the war in Ukraine. As the two organizations celebrate 30 years of cooperation, the acting OSCE Chairman and current Macedonian Foreign Minister, Bujar Osmani, outlined the situation in the old continent, with special emphasis on the conflict in Ukraine.
“I make a call to seek peace quickly. In our backyard, in Europe, in the OSCE zone, a terrible war is going on. The possible consequences of this war are serious and threaten world peace and stability,” said Bujar Osmani.
The OSCE Chairman since January, Bujar Osmani, recalled that the UN was created to avoid conflicts after the Second World War and that the OSCE aims to ensure stability and cooperation through trust and dialogue. However, he left a doubt: where are these targets now?
“Do we respect the principles and values that we promised to comply with? Stability has been destroyed, trust has been lost while cooperation is almost non-existent. Dialogue, if it still exists, is increasingly poisoned”, questioned the OSCE president.
The North Macedonian Foreign Minister also says that, given the difficulties, the Organization for European Security and Cooperation and the United Nations should cooperate further.
“The UN and the OSCE must stand together and work resolutely in the search for peace because no organization can do it alone. Only through collaboration and mutual support can we create a safe and prosperous world for all,” she warned.
And at a time when the world is facing unprecedented challenges, Bujar Osmani says both organizations need to keep up with the changes.
“As security challenges evolve, the nature of OSCE cooperation with the UN must also evolve. We must become more pragmatic and action-oriented. Over the past 30 years, the two organizations have developed very close coordination in operational terms, we now need to further strengthen those relationships,” added Bujar Osmani.
For the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, politics exists to defend the interests of the people and, therefore, politicians cannot sit idly by. Furthermore, he argues that it has never been more important to prioritize the well-being of populations and listen to calls for justice, freedom and dignity.
