Sunak disappointed by poor results in England councils

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak admitted his “disappointment” with the preliminary results of Thursday’s local elections in England, which indicated a defeat for the Conservative Party and gains by opposition parties.

“It’s always a disappointment to lose hard-working Conservative councillors,” he said, in remarks in London, broadcast by Sky News, stressing that “in terms of results, it’s still early days” because only part of the results were acquaintance.

After counting 62 of the 230 municipalities that went to the polls, ‘Labor’ won 653 seats out of some 8,000 in dispute, 120 more than in 2019, while the ‘Tories’ lost 226, after electing 452 councillors.

The Liberal Democrats, the fourth largest opposition party, are also taking advantage of the Conservatives’ slip, winning 59 new seats out of 329 secured.

The Greens also have 33 more among the 55 chosen.

Sunak assured, even so, that the ‘tories’ are “advancing in important electoral battlefields”.

“I am not detecting any massive movement towards the Labor Party or enthusiasm for its agenda,” he argued, vowing to continue working to achieve government priorities such as reducing inflation, growing the economy, reducing health waiting lists and curbing illegal immigration. . .

Although the counting of ballots began overnight in some places, most of the results will only be known later today.

Analysts hope that the results of these elections, the last on a national scale before the legislative elections scheduled for 2024, give an idea of the voting trends for the election of the next government.

The Conservative Party has been in power for 13 years, although for the first five it governed in coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

The Labor Party is trying to recover from its worst electoral defeat since 1935 in parliaments in 2019, while then-leader Jeremy Corbyn lost to Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party, which won an absolute majority.
