Sweden, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), today condemned the execution in Iran of Iranian-Swedish dissident Habib Chaab for “terrorism.”
“The death penalty is an inhuman and irreversible punishment and Sweden, like the rest of the EU, condemns its application in all circumstances,” Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said in a tweet.
Sentenced to death on December 6 – sentence confirmed on March 12 – Habib Chaab was accused by the Tehran authorities of being the leader of an Arab separatist group in the west of the country.
Habib Chaab had disappeared in October 2020 after going to Istanbul, before reappearing a month later in prison in Iran.
“The death sentence of Habib Chaab (…) at the head of the terrorist group Harakat al-Nidal, was carried out this morning,” the agency of the judicial authority Mizan Online announced.
In Iran, executions are usually carried out by hanging at dawn.
In November 2020, Iranian television broadcast a video of Habib Chaab, in which he is accused of a fatal attack on a military parade in September 2018 in Ahvaz, the capital of Khuzestan province (southwest), and of working for Saudi intelligence services. .
In his message on Twitter, the head of Swedish diplomacy recalled that Stockholm had unsuccessfully asked Iran to waive the death penalty.
Sweden has taken steps to offer consular assistance to the Chaab, but to no avail as Iran does not recognize dual citizenship.
