Norway’s King Harald, 86, has been admitted with an infection and will remain in hospital for “several days”, the palace said on Monday.
“His Majesty the King is ill and has been admitted to the national hospital,” the palace said in a statement.
He has “an infection that needs to be treated and will therefore be in hospital for several days,” the statement said, describing his condition as “stable”.
Harald, who ruled the Scandinavian nation for 32 years, has had a series of health problems in recent years and now uses crutches to get around.
Harald was taken to hospital last August and December for infections, as well as Covid and breathing problems.
The king underwent surgery for bladder cancer in 2003 and surgery in 2005 for heart valve problems.
On Saturday, his son Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit represented the Royal Family of Norway at the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London.
It is still not confirmed that Harald will be present at the state visit of the President of Italy Sergio Mattarella to Norway on Thursday and Friday.
“Nothing will change in your program for the time being,” palace spokesman Sven Gjeruldsen told AFP.
The King was due to take part in ceremonies on Monday commemorating the liberation of Norway and Europe from Nazi Germany on May 8, 1945. Prince Haakon will take his place.
