Iran this Monday executed two people sentenced to death for blasphemy and insulting Islam by posting “content against religion” on the internet and defending atheism.
Yousef Mehrdad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zare have been hanged for crimes against Islam, reports the Mizan news agency, which is dependent on the Ministry of Justice.
The two men had been sentenced to death for “involvement in a content distribution network” against Islam, insulting Muhammad and promoting atheism, Iranian judicial authorities said.
The Mizan agency describes the two death row inmates as “destroyer of Islam” and adds that Yousef Mehrdad was in possession of documents referring to the destruction of Islam by fire.
Iranian justice said the two convicts used French phone numbers to activate Internet service accounts to carry out anti-religious activities.
Mizen adds that the two men “confessed to committing the crimes” had been arrested three years ago.
Iran is taking a very tough stance against what it considers “crimes against Islam”.
According to international organizations, Iran is one of the countries with the most executions by death penalty, culminating in 246 hangings in 2021.
