The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, receives this Tuesday the Carlos V European Award, in Spain, in an act presided over by King Felipe VI and in which the President and Prime Minister of Portugal will be present.
The Carlos V European Award recognizes the work of “people, organizations, projects or initiatives that have contributed to the general knowledge and enhancement of the cultural, social, scientific and historical values of Europe, as well as to the process of construction and European integration” , according to the Foundation of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste, which assigns it.
António Guterres receives the XVI Carlos V European Award, which the jury has awarded him “for his credible, broad and long life trajectory dedicated to social commitment, the process of European construction, the promotion of multilateralism and human dignity as the axis of his work, addressing global challenges and crises”.
For the award jury, the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) and former Portuguese Prime Minister has been “a fundamental figure in facing a period of unprecedented change and with terrible consequences for Europe and the world.”
“With his tenacious work, he has promoted actions to respond to the covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, to face the climate emergency and achieve ambitious reforms to face the challenges of the 21st century”, according to the jury’s decision, met last March.
The awards ceremony will take place at the Yuste Monastery, Cáceres, and in addition to the President and Prime Minister of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and António Costa, the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs will also be present. Present were Josep Borrell, the Spanish Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, the Secretary General of the Ibero-American Community, Andrés Allamand, and the President of the Junta de Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara.
The list of personalities present at the ceremony also includes, among other figures, 21 ambassadors to Spain from European and Latin American countries and the high representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Ángel Moratinos.
The Foundation of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste has King Felipe VI as its “honorary president” and has already awarded this award to two other Portuguese, the former President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio (in 2004) and the former President of the Government and former President of the European Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso (in 2014).
Jacques Delors, Wilfried Martens, Felipe González, Mikhail Gorbachev, Helmut Kohl, Simone Veil, Javier Solana and Angela Merkel were other personalities previously honored with this award.
The award ceremony coincides with Europe Day, an event that is celebrated on May 9 and marks the historic “Schuman Declaration [Robert Schuman, o ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros de França em 1950]”, considered as the founding moment of the current European Union.
