Ukrainian authorities warn the population of possible Russian attacks

Ukrainian military spokeswoman Natalia Gumeniuk on Tuesday called on the Ukrainian population to remain vigilant and avoid rallies due to the possibility of Russian attacks, while celebrating Victory Day against Nazism in Russia.

In an interview with Ukrainian television, quoted by the local Unian news agency, Natalia Gumeniuk warned of the possibility that Russia “continues to terrorize” and “keep the Ukrainian population in tension.”

The spokeswoman stressed that the risk of missile attacks persists in various regions of Ukraine. Russia attacked several areas of Ukraine on Monday with more than 20 cruise missiles, but most were shot down by Ukrainian air defenses.

Russia has intensified drone strikes in recent days [aeronaves não tripuladas] and missiles against kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

According to specialists from the EFE news agency, the objective of launching these missiles, which are intercepted most of the time by Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses, would be to locate the defensive systems used by Ukraine and which run out of ammunition.

Russia celebrates Victory Day today, celebrating the triumph of the Soviet Union (USSR) over Nazi Germany.

Russian nationalism tries to identify Ukraine with the Nazis and present-day Russia with the USSR, which defeated Hitler’s National Socialism. This move made today’s date a central celebration on their calendar.

In most countries, specifically in Europe, Victory Day over the Nazis is celebrated on May 8.
