Putin accuses the “West” of having forgotten the history of Nazism

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday described as criminal the “ideology of supremacy defended by Western leaders”, whom he accuses of forgetting.

“We consider any ideology of supremacy disgusting, criminal and deadly…. They seem to have forgotten who led the insane aspiration of the Nazis to dominate the world,” Vladimir Putin said during the military parade in Moscow’s Red Square.

The Russian president also said in the same speech that a real war was unleashed against Russia, guaranteeing victory and accusing the West of being the cause of division, conflicts and revolutions in the world.

“Again, a real war has been unleashed against our Russia. But we will resist international terrorism and we will also defend the people of Donbass. [território anexado na Ucrânia] just as we will guarantee our security,” Putin said.

This Tuesday, Russia celebrates Victory Day, which commemorates the European Allied victory over Nazi Germany at the end of World War II, on May 8, 1945.

In countries under the influence of the former Soviet Union, from 1967, Victory Day began to be celebrated on May 9, in reference to the day of the surrender of Nazi forces to Soviet troops, and became considered a holiday.

In Russia it is officially marked every year since 1995.
