The Ukrainian parliament is calling for the inclusion of the term “Ruscism” in the English and Spanish dictionary

The Ukrainian parliament has requested institutions dealing with English and Spanish dictionaries to introduce the term “Ruscism” to denote “the aggressive ideology of the Russian Federation”.

“We launched an awareness campaign on the term ‘Ruscism’ to denote the aggressive ideology of the Russian Federation”underlined this Wednesday the deputy chairman of the information committee of the Ukrainian parliament, Yevgenia Kravchuk, according to a note from the Rada on the social network Facebook.

Yevgenia Kravchuk explained that the Ukrainians have already contacted the Oxford Dictionary, responsible for English-language dictionaries, adding that the next step is the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) and the Association of Spanish Language Academies, the official institutions that engage in the Spanish language.

The Association of Spanish Language Academies is formed by the RAE and 22 other institutions that ensure the robustness and relevance of Spanish in Latin America, the Philippines and Equatorial Guinea, the agency Efe reported.

The term “Russism” is inspired by the terms “fascism” and “racism” and is often used in Ukraine to refer to the alleged supremacist ideology by which the Kremlin justifies the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine’s parliament last week passed a law officially adopting the term “Ruscism” to define President Vladimir Putin’s Russian “totalitarian ideology,” which Kiev says is characterized by militarism and disregard for human rights and features of Russian imperialism and the communism combines.

“We propose to include the term ‘Ruscism’ in the vocabulary used in Spanish-speaking countries, which have a population of at least 407 million people.”added Kravchuk.

The Ukrainian parliament also asked the UN, the European Parliament and other international organizations to adopt the use of this term, which began to be used to define Russia’s actions in the 1990s, during the first Chechen war.

The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 has so far led to the flight of more than 14.7 million people – 6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 8.2 million to European countries – according to the latest data from the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).

At least 18 million Ukrainians need humanitarian aid and 9.3 million need food aid and housing.

The Russian invasion – justified by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russian security – was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and Russia political and economic sanctions.

The UN presented as confirmed since the start of the war, which entered its 441st day this Wednesday, 8,791 civilian deaths and 14,815 wounded, underlining that these numbers are far below the real ones.
