Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that the Ukrainian military needed more time to prepare a counteroffensive capable of pushing back the Russian occupation forces.
In an interview with the British public television station BBCZelensky considered that it would be “unacceptable” to plan a military assault at this time because there is a risk of “loss of many lives”.
“With what we have, we could move forward successfully,” Zelensky said, noting, however, that the risks would be high at this point.
“We would lose a lot of people. That would be unacceptable,” the Ukrainian head of state said in an interview in kyiv.
“So we have to wait. We need some time,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive against the Russian invasion has been mentioned in recent weeks by sources in kyiv.
Ukraine has been receiving Western weapons and logistics, including armored vehicles, and several countries have trained Ukrainian personnel.
Russian forces are firmly entrenched in the eastern parts of Ukraine.
The military offensive launched on February 24, 2022 by Russia in Ukraine was condemned by the broader international community, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing political and economic sanctions on Russia.
