“A broth for extremism”. Meloni “has no powers or support” to govern Italy

Alexandra Leitão, former PS minister, said that the victory of Giorgia Meloni’s extreme right leads to a reflection on what is happening in Europe’s democracies. Election results in Italy were under review in the TSF and CNN Portugal program The Uncertainty Principle.

“Everything indicates that Giorgia Meloni will be invited to form a government and that she has a support coalition that will allow her to form a government, which means a turn to the extreme right,” says Alexandra Leitão, recalling that Meloni is “an admirer of Benito Mussolini.” .

“What we have here is the third economy of the European Union, the founding country of the EEC, to be led by the extreme right. It has a direct cause that has to do with the electoral system, which has changed and created single member constituencies, where the coalition apparently obtained an excellent result, but more important than these reasons are the reasons that force us to look at everything that is happening in Europe and that, unfortunately, is not happening only in Italy, he explains questioning: “To the point is that democracies are allowing, due to the mistakes they make and the circumstances, to create a broth for this type of extremism to appear? ”.

Alexandra Leitão points out the civilizational setback with reflections on the rights of migrants.

“These extremisms end up consolidating and attracting people who feel excluded from a certain economy, from a certain society, but then it is the civil, political, minority and migrant rights that are totally destroyed. They will surely bring wing extremism in countries like Sweden, France, now in Italy. In Portugal, we also have our process underway”, he laments.

Pacheco Pereira says that in the case of Italy there have always been fascist movements since the Second World War and he considers that the European Union has responsibilities.

“I am concerned about what is happening in the European People’s Party, which is already somehow paving the way for the Italian government, focusing only on the issue of saying ‘don’t touch Europe.’ What happened and immigration issues are basic issues for everyone. these movements and that the governments have not been able to confront”, she defends.

António Lobo Xavier goes further and says that the population has chosen a candidate who will not be up to the task of governing Italy.

“What worries me the most about the results in Italy is the lack of preparation of these populist candidates. Mrs. Meloni is ignorant, she is incapable from the point of view of forming a government. Italy has just elected a prime minister who, objectively, does not it has a path that allows us to predict something positive for Italy, it has no powers, it has no path, it has no support or a support structure in the party that gives it any guarantee that this party, with these electoral results, will have a government that protects Italy from the threats that loom on the horizon,” he stresses.

According to partial results, the right-wing and ultra-right coalition -led by the Brothers of Italy party and which also includes Matteo Salvini’s League and Silvio Berlusconi’s conservative Força Italia party- obtained 44.16% of the votes in the legislatures .

The centre-left bloc, led by Enrico Letta’s Democratic Party, is expected to get 26% of the vote.
