The results are not yet official, but in Italy it is already known that Enrico Letta will not continue as leader of the Democratic Party (PD). At a press conference in Rome, Letta announced the appointment of a party congress for March of next year and assured that he would not be a candidate.
According to Letta, the objective of this congress involves “a profound reflection on what the Democratic Party is, what it wants to be and if it wants to be a new democratic party.”
“I believe in this concept of a new Democratic Party that is up to the challenge of this time, of a strong right, which won the right to govern Italy in the coming years,” he said, stressing that “there is a new generation, with conditions to relaunch the PD, in the interest of Italy and Europe”.
Enrico Letta was Prime Minister of Italy and is one of the founders of the Democratic Party.
In this Sunday’s elections, the PD was the second most voted party, with slightly less than 20% of the vote, but the center-left bloc did not exceed 26% of the vote, as many as Georgia Meloni’s party, the Brothers of Italy. who won the elections.
