“We all miss democracy,” says Erdogan opponent

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after his vote on Sunday, expressed hope that the outcome of Turkey’s biggest elections in generations would be “good for the future of the country”, but did not predict a victory.

“My hope is that after the count is completed tonight, the result will be good for the future of our country, for Turkish democracy,” the president said.

Already the main opponent of the Turkish president promised to restore democracy after the vote.

“We all miss democracy,” Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the main opposition party, told reporters in Ankara. “Summer, God willing, spring is coming to this land.”

Polls suggest Kilicdaroglu, a 74-year-old former official, stands a chance of ending Erdogan’s party’s more than two decades of rule.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu is leader of the Republican People’s Party, leading a six-party opposition alliance that spans Turkey’s cultural and religious divides. This alliance was created with the sole purpose of overthrowing Erdogan.
