Asylum applications rise 66% in June to more than 65,000 in the EU

The number of first asylum applications filed in the European Union (EU) rose 66 percent in June to 65,645, compared to the same month in 2021, Eurostat published on Monday.

Compared to May, according to the European Statistical Service, the number of first asylum applications increased by 4%.

The monthly growth, highlights Eurostat, was due to an increase in applicants from Tunisia (990 more people, 82% more), Turkey (+850, +31%) and Pakistan (+645, +22%).

The largest number of applications were submitted by Syrians (8,600), followed by Afghans (7,705), Venezuelans (4,705), Colombians (3,840) and Turks (3,625).

As for Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion, launched on February 24, after the peak of asylum applications submitted in March, the number has been falling, with the record of 975 in June, Eurostat underlining that this is also due to which these people benefit from temporary protection.

Germany (12,315) is the country with the most asylum applications (19% of the EU), followed by France (11,095, 17%), Spain (10,595, 16%), Austria (9,060, 14%) and Italy (5,690, 14%). 9%).

In Portugal, 130 new asylum applications were registered in June.

In June, there were still 6,190 subsequent applications (people who filed a new application after a decision on the first one), a year-on-year increase of 2%, but a decrease of 1% in the monthly comparison.
