At least 26 people were killed on Sunday in a collision between a heavy vehicle and a minibus in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas.
Official government sources, cited by the Mexican newspaper Informador, indicated that the rescue teams found 26 bodies, a count that is still preliminary due to the state of the remains.
This is because the collision caused a fire that completely destroyed both vehicles.
When the emergency services arrived, both the bus and the truck were already on fire, and rescue teams found several lifeless bodies outside the vehicles, including a baby.
The accident occurred early Sunday morning on a road that connects the cities of Hidalgo and Zaragoza, in the south of the state of Tamaulipas, on the border with the United States.
According to the local press, most of the victims belonged to a family that had rented a minibus to travel from the city of Monterrey (north) to the state of Veracruz (east).
A source from the Tamaulipas Public Ministry, who asked the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency not to be identified, said that the trucker’s family was also traveling in the cabin of the truck.
Civil Protection of Mexico indicated that the state Public Ministry is investigating the causes of the incident.
Truck accidents have increased in recent years in Mexico due to speeding, poor road conditions, or driver fatigue.
