A British man is accused of murdering his ailing wife, 74-year-old Janice Hunter, who suffered from leukaemia. A case that took place in December 2021, outside the town of Paphos, Cyprus, where the couple lived.
David Hunter, 75, claimed in court that it was Janice who begged him to kill her.
Last Monday, this retired miner explained in court how he killed his wife and his lawyers claimed his death was an assisted suicide as the patient had a rare form of blood cancer in a terminal condition. On the other hand, the doctor accompanying Janice stated that despite her suffering from leukemia, it would not be a terminal cancer.
At his first trial in December, he was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
In giving his testimony, with tears in his eyes, he says that after his wife had spent the past five weeks urging him to help her, because she was “tired of life”, he acted.
David Hunter further stated that he loved the woman and would never have killed her if she had not begged him. “I regret what I had to do,” he added. However, his statements were not enough and he is now in the dock charged with murder. Prosecutors do not accept the theory that he wanted to help the woman without evidence.
“If we accept this, any other man who kills a woman in the future will say: we had an agreement,” Cypriot prosecutor Andreas Hadjikyrou said.
