Six dead, five injured in shipwreck in northern Mozambique

At least six people have been killed and five others injured after a shipwreck that occurred on Sunday in the Angoche district of Nampula, northern Mozambique, an official source said on Monday.

The incident occurred after the ship collided with a log in one of the region’s rivers, after registering engine failures, said Alexandre Selemane, head of inspection at the maritime administration in Angoche, quoted by Rádio Moçambique.

The five injured “are out of danger,” the official said, noting that the number of people on the ship is not yet known.

Authorities do not know the whereabouts of the crew, who fled after the incident, Alexandre Selemane said.

According to the authorities, the motor vessel has a capacity of 44 passengers and about three tons of cargo.
