The U.S. government on Monday urged former intelligence analyst Edward Snowden to be extradited and brought before U.S. justice despite obtaining Russian citizenship.
“Our position has not changed. Snowden must return to the US, where he will face trial just like any other American citizen,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said at a news conference.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday granted Russian citizenship to Snowden, 39, who has had asylum in the Russian Federation since 2013.
The former intelligence analyst fled the US that year, where he is accused of violating the Espionage Act after revealing details of those services’ programs.
Snowden, who applied for citizenship on November 2, 2020, did not comment on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
