New Delhi authorities increased the number of police stationed on the subway this week, following the release of a video of a couple kissing in one of the carriages, which drew criticism from conservative Indian society.
The video, filmed by a passenger, quickly spread on social media, with many users calling the show of affection between the couple an “obscene act”, with some even suggesting changing the name of the “Delhi Metro” to “PornHub”, a popular place of Internet pornography.
“I have seen many couples of boys and girls sitting in a very embarrassing way on the subway, hugging each other. It looks very strange, they are in a public place, they cannot do these things in a public place, ”she defended. Samson Honey, a lawyer who uses the subway daily to go to work, at the Delhi High Court, quoted by the Spanish news agency EFE.
Given this and other similar incidents in recent weeks, the police in charge of guarding the Indian capital’s subway announced this week that it would increase the number of patrols “to prevent obscene activities,” said the deputy commissioner of that contingent, Jitendra Mani. he told the Indian news agency PTI.
The increase in police presence has been visible in recent days, with agents continuously patrolling the stations and entering each of the trains, despite the fact that it is a means of public transport that previously had a strong military force for security reasons.
“The deployment of police personnel is positive (…), no one can commit these vulgarities or spread them, this is not our culture, it is Western culture. Most people follow Western culture these days,” added Honey.
In the last month, the metro in the Indian capital has been the scene of several controversies of this type. A woman also came under fire after a video of her sitting on the subway with a support and a miniskirt.
These are behaviors that can be understood by some people, although “they may hurt the feelings of others,” said another subway passenger who did not want to be named.
“It’s a bit embarrassing to see such acts in public, although it basically depends on the level,” observed another subway user, referring to other recently circulated images of men allegedly masturbating in carriages, albeit surrounded by other commuters.
The New Delhi metro has also witnessed other unusual, but not obscene, behavior recently, such as a man who took advantage of a short train ride to brush his teeth and a fight between two women in which one of them ended up spraying the another with pepper spray, causing widespread coughing among the remaining passengers.
