Russia pulls out of grain deal if fertilizer sanctions continue

The authorities of the Russian Federation warned on Thursday that they will only remain in the agreement for the export of grain from Ukrainian ports after July 18, if the sanctions on the export of their fertilizers are lifted.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that “unless these requirements are met, there will in principle be no extension of the Black Sea Initiative and the agreement will be terminated after July 17 this year.” .

Thus, the Russian Federation demanded from the US agricultural products from Ukrainian ports.

Even so, Russian diplomacy demanded the reintegration of the Russian Agricultural Bank (Rosselkhozbank) into the SWIFT international payment system, the supply of spare parts and the unlocking of agricultural logistics, the unfreezing of assets of Russian companies, and the reopening of the ammonia pipeline. linking Tolyatti, in the center of the Russian Federation, with Odessa, in southwestern Ukraine.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday that, together with Russian and Ukrainian officials, he had reached an agreement to extend the agreement for the export of Ukrainian grains and Russian fertilizers through the Black Sea for another two months.

On several occasions, the Russian authorities have expressed criticism of the agreement, considering that exports of its fertilizers are not taking place as defined in the original agreement of July 2022.

This issue was even one of the main problems during the negotiations two months ago, when the United Nations Organization (UN), Turkey, the Russian Federation and Ukraine reached the limit of an extension of the agreement, which was about to expire. At the time, the UN said that the extension of the agreement was for 120 days, but the Russian Federation replied that it was for 60 days.
