Russian deputy minister died on his way back from a trip to Cuba

Petr Kucherenko, Russia’s deputy minister of science and higher education, died on Saturday at the age of 46 after feeling ill during a flight to Cuba on which he was part of a government delegation.

On the way back, the plane landed in the Russian town of Mineralnye Vody, where Kucherenko received medical attention after he was pronounced dead.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Peter Alexandrovich,” the official note from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education said.

A graduate of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, the deputy minister at the head of various public entities was involved in the implementation of educational projects.

From 2012 to 2014, he served as Chief of Staff of the Committee of the Federation Council on Constitutional Legislation, Legal and Judicial Issues and Civil Society Development in Russia.

Between 2014 and 2020, Kucherenko served as Chief of Staff of the Federation Council’s Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building.

In 2020, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, and a year later held the position of Secretary of State.

Kucherenko was awarded the medal of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” of the II degree and also held the title of Acting State Councilor of the Russian Federation.
