Etna volcano erupts, spewing clouds of ash over Catania

The Italian volcano Etna, the most active in Europe, erupted again on Sunday, spewing a cloud of ash over the city on its slopes, Catania, forcing traffic to be suspended at the airport for security reasons.

“Due to the eruptive activity of Mount Etna and the fall of abundant volcanic ash on the airport pavement, flight operations are suspended until security conditions are restored,” the airport management announced in a statement.

Mount Etna is currently experiencing one of its eruptions, which often blanket the surrounding Sicilian towns in ash.

The latter can only be controlled with technology, since the crater of the volcano, about 3,300 meters high, remains covered by clouds, due to the storm that is currently hitting the island of Sicily.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) confirmed the new eruption, whose thunder was heard in the towns of Adrano and Biancavilla, on its southwestern slope, the direction in which the cloud dispersed.

The tremors registered a “high level” at 07:20 local time (06:20 in Lisbon) and the eruption caused an ash shower in Catania.
