The driver of a vehicle that crashed into a fence outside the White House in Washington has been detained by the US Secret Service, the agency responsible for the security of the President of the United States.
“No one from the Secret Service or the White House was injured and the incident is under investigation,” the official statement said.
However, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said via a post on the social network Twitter that the “preliminary investigation” indicates that the driver may have “deliberately” driven the vehicle into the barriers at Lafayette Square, a gateway to the official residence of the US head of state.
According to local television WUSA9, part of the national network CBS, a search of the vehicle revealed what “looks like a Nazi flag”, but no further information was provided.
The vehicle is a rented van and the incident took place at 10 p.m. Monday (2 a.m. today in Lisbon).
