More than 100 firefighters are battling a bushfire that broke out in a seven-story building in Sydney, Australia, on Thursday and is spreading to other buildings, according to local emergency services.
“The building is in danger of collapsing. The fire has started to spread to a number of neighboring buildings, including residential buildings,” the New South Wales state fire department said in a statement.
Twenty fire engines and more than 100 firefighters were deployed to “contain and extinguish the fire” at the Randle Street building near Sydney Central Station, emergency services said.
At least one nearby car was destroyed in the fire, authorities added.
“We ask people to avoid the area while we are conducting firefighting operations,” the local fire department called.
Images circulating on social networks show very high flames, as well as a thick column of smoke coming out of the building.
