Iran has alleged that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is using the Islamic Republic to try to gain military and financial support from the West, and claims that Russia is using Iranian drones to attack its territory.
The United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Iran precisely over its drone program, alleging that the country provided Moscow with unmanned aerial assets during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an accusation Tehran has denied.
On Wednesday, Zelensky said in his daily speech that Tehran’s “support for evil cannot be denied” and directly asked Iranians, “Why do you want to be complicit in Russian terror?”
In response, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said Zelensky’s “repetition of false accusations” against the Islamic Republic was “in line with the propaganda and media warfare of the anti-Iranian axis.”
“This was done with the aim of attracting as much military and financial aid as possible to western countries,” said Kanani, adding that Ukraine had “specific political goals and motives behind such allegations” and avoided “specialist negotiations with the Iranian side to investigate the allegations”.
It is estimated that Russia must have used 1,160 Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drones in attacks on Ukraine.
“Even though we have learned to shoot down most of their kamikaze drones… there are still hits,” Zelensky said Wednesday. “If you shoot Shahed into a dormitory with our students, people die, fires start and first responders arrive.”
