Denmark will donate almost 2.4 billion euros extra to Ukraine through a fund for the purchase of military equipment, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on Monday.
“The war in Ukraine is in a very critical phase, with a serious situation on the battlefield, and therefore Ukraine needs all possible support,” the government leader said during an interview.
“It is now that the Ukrainians need our weapons and our support. Hence the urgency,” explained Frederiksen, whose name will be proposed in the coming months for the position of NATO Secretary General.
The financial envelope of seven billion Danish kroner (about 950 million euros) – already planned for 2023, in a fund set up in March – will be supplemented by this aid announced this Monday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already responded to the announcement by expressing his thanks.
“This important contribution will further strengthen the combat capabilities of the Ukrainian army in the short and medium term. Our strength lies in our unit,” Zelensky said in a post on the social network Twitter.
In mid-May, Denmark had already pledged to play a major role in training Ukrainian soldiers to fly American F-16 fighter jets as part of a European plan.
Last week, Frederiksen did not rule out a donation of Danish F-16s in the future, from its fleet of 40 of these aircraft, including about 30 in service, which will be gradually replaced by American F-35s over the next few years.
