At least seven people have died in Morocco after drinking counterfeit alcoholic beverages, authorities said on Wednesday, adding that two suspects have been arrested in Meknes, a city in the center of the country, in connection with the case.
Moroccan police said the detainees are two men, aged 67 and 17, who are suspected of selling these counterfeit alcoholic products to the victims.
The arrests came during the investigation into the deaths of seven people and the hospitalization of an eighth after they consumed a store-bought drink.
According to the Moroccan news agency MAP, security forces seized a dozen bottles in which these alcoholic beverages would be stored.
In September 2022, Moroccan authorities confirmed the deaths of about 20 people and the hospitalization of another 11 for consuming counterfeit alcoholic beverages in the town of Alcácer-Quibir, about 100 kilometers south of Tangier.
