One person died this Wednesday after an anti-terrorist operation in Antwerp, (about 45 km north of Brussels). The information was officially confirmed by the authorities.
A spokesman for the Belgian Public Prosecutor’s Office, quoted by the local press, added that this police operation is related to arms trafficking. According to the same source, several search warrants were executed.
The operation included “a dozen records”, one of which ended in a shootout between the police and the owner of a house, which resulted in the death of the latter and on which an investigation has already been opened, said the spokesman for the Ministry of Antwerp. public, Eric Van Duyse, quoted by the Belgian press.
The same source indicated that the operation was launched to contain “the preparation of the terrorist attack.” Prosecutors also said “several weapons and ammunition” were seized.
Authorities are investigating links to the far right and promise details once the investigation is complete.
