Japanese Nintendo ends commercial activities in Russia

Japanese video game company Nintendo announced on Thursday that it will end operations in Russia, where it had already reduced operations since 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces.

Nintendo had “temporarily” suspended exports to Russia in March last year.

Products for sale through the company’s Internet portal were already unavailable due to the suspension of transactions in rubles (Russian currency).

“As a result of this situation and due to the economic outlook, Nintendo Europe has decided to close the activities of the Russian branch,” the Japanese company writes in a short statement released on Wednesday evening.

The business group based in Kyoto, Western Japan also indicated that customers who already had a “Nintendo account” will be able to download digital content that has already been purchased, but that “it is no longer possible to create a new account.” to make”.

On the portal, data related to payments has also been removed “for security reasons,” the company’s statement said.

Sony, a Japanese company that competes with Nintendo in video games, had already announced in 2022 that it would suspend the export of games and consoles to Russia.

Other major video game companies such as Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard, Epic Games, Niantic and Take-Two have announced similar measures.
