According to the suit filed in Florida federal court, Trump kept the documents unsecured at his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, which regularly hosted large social events with tens of thousands of guests.
And on at least two occasions, Trump has shown confidential documents about U.S. military operations and plans for those not authorized to see them at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
The documents Trump took with him “contained information about United States and foreign defense capabilities and weapons, United States nuclear programs; possible vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military strikes; and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack.’, says the prosecutor.
“Unauthorized disclosure of these classified documents could jeopardize the national security of the United States,” he added.
The charges, filed by Jack Smith, special counsel for the Justice Department, each face up to 20 years in prison.
Trump aide Walt Nauta has been charged with six counts of helping Trump hide the documents.
