Pope tells PPE that Catholic politicians should approach migration with brotherhood

Pope Francis this Sunday asked European Catholic politicians to face new challenges, such as migration “under the great guiding principle” of “human brotherhood,” in a message sent to the European People’s Party (EPP) meeting in Rome.

In his message, sent from the hospital where he was admitted, Francis offers several pieces of advice to European parliamentarians and in particular to Christian politicians who, he defended, “should be distinguished by the seriousness with which they approach questions, opportunistic solutions and always faithful adhere to the criteria of the dignity of the person and the common good”.

Recalling his last trip to Hungary, the pope referred to “a Europe that fully appreciates the different cultures that make it up, its wealth of traditions, languages and identities, which are those of its peoples and its history”, but which “at the same time is able, with its institutions and its political and cultural initiatives, to make this rich mosaic form coherent figures”.

“High values and high political vision are needed. I do not intend to diminish the importance of day-to-day management, of good governance. But it is not enough, it is not enough to maintain a Europe that is facing the major global challenges of the 21st century”, defended.

That is why he stressed that the original commitment of the founding fathers of a united Europe “can also be today’s commitment”, that is to say: “to strive not only for an organization that protects the interests of the European nations, but for a union in which everyone can live a life “on a human, fraternal and just scale”.

Papa stated that “Christian politicians of today should be recognized for their ability to translate the great dream of brotherhood into concrete actions of good politics at all levels: local, national and international. For example, challenges such as migration or care for the planet can only be addressed from this great guiding principle: human brotherhood”.

In another opinion, Francis called for young people to be taken care of and to think of “a Europe and a world that makes their dreams come true”.
