Pope Francis underwent respiratory physiotherapy and prayed the Angelus prayer this Sunday in the chapel of the hospital apartment where he has been admitted, the Vatican revealed, adding that the pope’s post-operative evolution is regular.
Doctors had advised against Pope Francis publicly celebrating the Angelus from the hospital to avoid attempts that could harm the healing of the mesh placed on his abdominal wall, following Wednesday’s surgery for an abdominal hernia.
The latest medical bulletin this Sunday said the pope remains fever-free and haemodynamically stable, having “undergoed respiratory physiotherapy and continues to move”.
“In the morning he followed the Holy Mass live on television and received the Eucharist. Then he went to the chapel of the private apartment [no décimo andar do Hospital Universitário Agostino Gemelli, em Roma]where he gathered in prayer before reciting the Angelus,” the Vatican said in a statement.
After the prayer, Pope Francis “had lunch with those who assist him in these days of confinement in the private apartment, [nomeadamente] doctors, assistants, nurses and gendarmerie personnel [a polícia do Vaticano]”, reads the statement.
The surgeon who operated on Fransciso last Wednesday, and also on the colon in July 2021, Sergio Alfieri, said at a press conference on Saturday that “all intravenous treatments had been suspended for the past few days” and that he was fed a semi-liquid diet.
According to the surgeon, the blood tests and the postoperative chest x-ray are good.
