UK Labor calls for an early election after Johnson’s resignation

UK Labor opposition leader Keir Starmer claimed an early general election this Sunday following the resignation of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson from his parliamentary seat, arguing that this accentuated divisions in the Conservative Party . “This farce must end. The citizens have had enough” of this Conservative government, Starmer said on Twitter.

Speaking to Rishi Sunak, the head of government who took office in October, he warned that “we must call elections and let the people speak out about these 13 years of failure by the conservatives,” the opposition leader added.

After Labour, the Liberal Democratic Party has also called for early elections. “The time has come for citizens to have a say in this chaotic Conservative government,” said Daisy Cooper, the party’s number two.

Boris Johnson, who resigned as prime minister in July following a series of scandals, announced last Friday that he was stepping down as deputy. Two other lawmakers, close associates of Johnson, did the same. Johnson accused the parliamentary committee investigating “Partygate”, about partying in Downing Street during the covid-19 pandemic, of “wanting to expel him from parliament”.

In a lengthy statement, the former British leader said the commission had prepared a report “full of inaccurate and biased statements”. His resignation, along with that of two other contributors, Nadine Dorries and Nigel Adams, will result in a three-ring midterm election that could jeopardize the Conservative majority.

Speaking of a possible return to politics for Johnson, who is about to turn 59, ultra-Conservative Jacob Rees-Mogg, a close associate, told the Mail on Sunday that he could “easily return to parliament at the next election” .
